Piriformis

Piriformis is a total pain in the butt.....It aches & has been bugging me :(  I had a bad case in the spring, pre-Avenue of the Giants.  And it's come back this fall.

Yesterday, I ignored the pain and ran a terrific long pace run (with 7 miles sub 8:45).  But it's really not a healthy strategy to run through pain. So now I'm antsy to get my body to feel well :O

Free fallin'

Every rose has its thorn, and every training cycle has its fall. Maybe it's because your body gets SO used to running that it's on autopilot mode OR maybe it's cumulative exhaustion from weeks and weeks of training :)

Regardless, about five minutes into today's mellow 50 minute run (mainly to burn off some nervous energy related to the multiple uncertainties and stresses of the day ahead), I tripped on the sidewalk on Lakeshore (near the Gap) and fell down. I have small scrapes on my hands and a long patch of sidewalk burn/road rash on one of my thighs. But, all in all, I'm no worse for the wear!

Back on the road

After five days off post-SF marathon, my mind and body were aching for a nice run. This morning I ran about 40 minutes on the flat portion of Trestle Glen.

I wish I could say that everything felt great, but my left hamstring does feel twingey. Afterward, I did some major stretching. Jeff was oh so kind to help pull up my left leg so I could stretch out the not-so-happy hamstring. I did a bit of reading on hamstring issues in runners, and it seems that gentle running followed by intensive stretching is a reputable treatment for tight/strained hammies.

Battle scars

An inventory of today's run:
1 new music mix for the ipod
3 gel snacks
3 bottles of water (probably not enough)
3+ bandaids (more on that later)
6.5 pace miles
20 miles total

I earned some battle scars from today's 20 miler in San Francisco. We started near Golden Gate park and ran up to the Cliff House because I love hills. Then we ran back to Lincoln Ave. and went up to Sunset Ave. Running up Sunset Ave. was a treat and discovering Stern Grove park was quite nice. Around mile 8, while running back down Sunset Avenue's dirt path, I tripped on a rock and kersplatted to the ground. I landed hard and flat on my hands and chest. Oopsies!

Unfortunately, I skinned one of my knees and the palms of both hands pretty bad. After taking a moment to assess the situation and squirt some water on the smartly bleeding wounds, J and decided that we needed to procure some first aid supplies. Fortunately, we found a small hardware store in the primarily resisidential Sunset district. The employee was a super nice and helpful dude who concerningly asked me if I was okay...I think I may have resembled an assault victim :( J and I took care of the wounds in the small bathroom by washing my hands a few times with very soapy water and then 'borrowing' some bandaids...Thank you, Noriega hardware store!!

It was time to get back on the road, and the next few miles were uneventful. For this fast finish long run, miles 12-18.5 were at pace. So, I ran all of the 6.5 miles at sub 9:15 pace, which is nicely within my goal range. I tried to push the last 1.5 miles and managed to run those in 8:57 pace. But after mile 17.5, it was hard to keep moving and may have been close to hitting the wall, which is never, ever a pleasant experience. Considering the ups and downs of the route, the accident (our third falling accident of THIS marathon training cycle!!!), and the general state of my body & legs at this point in training, I think it was a terrific twenty miler!

Caring for dead legs

Yesterday my legs felt dead tired...yucky tired. I'm blaming the 400s for shredding my quads.

I drank lots of water to flush out any remaining lactic acid, especially in my quads. I took a bath to loosen my muscles. I also spent some quality time with the foam roller to get some kinks out. Ouch! The hope is to fend off any soreness or overtraining issues.

Today my legs feel a bit better, though not 100%. I did a mellow run and did not--at any point--push the pace. I really just ran to get blood flowing through my muscles. I'm continuing to drink plenty of water (especially in this heat wave!) and will do some more foam rollin' soon.

**Please note that when you google foam roller, some odd photos pop up, but I tried to pick a relatively neutral pic

Humpday

I'm easing back into the running, so I did a mellow 40 minute run to Piedmont Avenue. It was good to get the run done first thing in the morning, though I nearly felt like I was sleep-running! I crossed paths with a fellow female runner who I see on many of my morning runs, so we exchanged good mornings, which is always nice.

My foot and lower legs feel fine. No speedwork this week, but I'm really looking forward to another long run on Saturday! I think I'll try speedwork again next week.

The bigger running announcement is that I am going to be running the SF marathon in July! I'm excited to run 26.2 miles all around SF, including ACROSS the Golden Gate bridge. J and I decided that we'd been far too sane about our running for far too long- in other words, we hadn't raced over 13 miles in almost a year ;). I will post the training schedule soon.

Back to the lake

I'm cautiously taking steps to get back on the wagon and in the saddle. Fortunately, my foot felt fine during a 40 minute run around Lake Merritt. I chose to run around the lake because it's a flat route, which puts a bit less wear and tear on feet and legs! Unfortunately, they're still doing construction on the lakefront path, so I had to dodge folks on the sidewalk. Afterwards, I spent some extra time stretching. So, step by step I think I'll be okay and will be right back on track very, very soon :) Whew!

Not broken

After extensive icing, ibuprofen, and magical Japanese menthol pads (courtesy of Nurse Y.) my diagnosis is that nothing's broken! I was afraid of a dreadful stress fracture somewhere in my foot/lower leg, but my foot and toes are feeling much, much better so that seems quite unlikely. I know I should wait and see how it feels after a couple more days of TLC. I will treat the pain as a wake up call to be a bit more careful in ramping up my mileage and speed work and hill work. I also ordered a new pair of Brooks today and hope the extra cushioning of a shiny, bouncy new pair of shoes will soothe my angry right foot.

Owie

Today's long run started off great. But toward the end of the 13.5 mile run, I felt pain in the top of my right foot and the ankle/lower shin area of my right leg. Argggh. It's most likely some sort of overuse injury; injuries are NO fun. So, I've already taken vitamin I (Advil!) and iced the area. I'll take 2 days off and hope that it feels much better, very soon.
